Publications
If no modifiers are used, ARCH searches return documents that include ANY of the words in your search. These results are weighted based on the whether the term appears in the title, the type of publication, and the "density" (the number of times that term is used in the publication based on its length, among other factors.
To improve the relevancy of your search results, you may use the filters on the left or change your search to include some of the tips below. You do not need to select any (or all) of the filters unless you want to limit your search to only some items in that group.
Exact Phrase Match
To search for an exact phrase, wrap your search terms in quotation (" ") marks. For example, while Lease Accounting (without quotes) would search for documents with Lease and/or Accounting anywhere in any order, "Lease Accounting" (with quotes) will only return documents with that whole phrase.
Note: special characters inside the quotation marks are treated as part of the phrase. This overrides the other search modifiers such as inclusions (+) and exclusions (-, !).
Including All Terms
To return only search results that return all key words in your search, use AND or the plus (+) symbol. When using AND, it must be in all capital letters with a space between it and the term(s) you want to include. When using the plus (+) symbol, ensure there is not a space between the symbol and the term(s) you want to include.
- Examples:
- Return documents with both "lease" and "accounting" in any order.
- lease AND accounting
- +lease +accounting
- Return documents with "lease", "accounting", and "retail" in any order.
- lease AND accounting AND retail
- +lease +accounting +retail
- Return documents with both "lease" and "accounting" in any order.
Excluding Terms
You can exclude terms by using NOT, the minus (-) symbol, or an exclamation point (!). This will ensure those terms do not appear anywhere in the returned documents. When using NOT, it must be in all capitals, and there must be a space between it and the term(s) you want to exclude. When using the minus (-) symbol or the exclamation point (!), ensure there is not a space between the symbol and the term(s) you want to exclude.
- Examples:
- Return documents with "lease," but not "accounting."
- lease NOT accounting
- lease -accounting
- lease !accounting
- Return documents with "lease" but not "accounting" or "retail."
- lease NOT accounting NOT retail
- lease -accounting -retail
- lease !accounting !accounting
- Return documents with "lease," but not "accounting."
Combining
For more complex searches you can use more than one search modifier.
- Examples:
- Returns documents with "lease," but not "accounting", and must contain the word "retail"
- lease NOT accounting AND retail
- lease -accounting +retail
- lease !accounting AND retail
- Returns documents with "lease," but not "accounting", and must contain the word "retail"
Proximity Search
Proximity search finds terms that are near each other in a document. To use this feature, insert a tilde (~) symbol at the end of a phrase wrapped in quotation marks followed by the maximum distance between the (expressed as a number of words).
- Example:
- Return documents with the terms "lease" and "accounting" within five words of each other.
- "lease accounting"~5
- Return documents with the terms "lease" and "accounting" within five words of each other.
